Pound sterling forecast and report - positive data leads to minor gains

Exchange rate forecast

A brief overview as to what has happened to the Pound in the last 24 hours and what is expected going forward.

Sterling strength as PMI data high and high Consumer Confidence

The Pound has gained in early morning trading following PMI (Purchasing Managers Index) data coming out the highest we have seen in some time, this shows that once the poor weather finally left us (if it even has gone for good) things did start to pick up.

We also saw Consumer Confidence figures out overnight which were also better than expected and the best we have seen for some time - a refreshing change for those with Sterling to sell following the recent losses seen.

Will the Bank of England introduce further QE - If so how will it affect exchange rates?

The Bank of England meet tommorow for their monthly interest rate decision and although no change to rates is expected Mervyn King has recently hinted at further QE being potentially placed into the system.

Those clients that had transfers to make last year will be well aware that the mere mention of QE tends to weaken Sterling and although this may well already be slightly factored into the market I wouldn't be surprised if the Pound loses ground should they decide on more and gains ground should they decide to leave it.

Sterling continues to find strength - important information for anyone with currency transfers to make!

Sterling has made yet another solid start to the days trading up by nearly 0.5% against a basket of major currencies.

It appears that my predictions from the back end of last year are so far looking pretty good as throughout reports from September onwards I have said that late January onwards will be the time for The Pound to make a fightback - the question is how long will it last??

There are a number of underlying factors that are still sniffing around that may falter the climb in the near future inclusive of Retail sales figures for January which I believe will be particuarly dire with the weather we have seen, this will all affect the revised GDP figures and may hamper SDterling really pushing on in February.

Also there is due to be a lot of political instability with the Iraq inquiry and an upcoming election which may lead to Sterling weakness alongside the final negative being the terror alert in the U.K being extremely high at present - should anything actually happen this could really knock the Pound immediately.

The four factors that effect the value of a currency are Economic stability, Political uncertainty, Acts of Terror and Acts of god.

If you have an upcoming requirement it may be worth hedging your bets and booking half on a forward contract so that you know even if these factors do bring the Pound crashing back down you have at least taken some advantage of this spike.

Sterling strength in early morning trading GBP vs EUR USD SEK CHF CAD AUD NZD

Sterling has gained ground against a basket of major currencies in early morning trading following much better than expected inflationary data for the U.K and slightly worse than expected unemployment data in the Eurozone.

Whether or not we will see this improvement throughout the afternoon is yet to be seen however it is a welcome spike for the Pound.

Dollar and Sterling strength following unemployment data - Euro loses ground

The Dollar and Sterling have had a fine day on the markets following a flurry of key unemployment data released at lunchtime today.

The unemployment data came out better than expected and off the back of this the Dollar has rallied accordingly alongside Sterling also gaining strength due to people now moving funds into sterling.

A well known saying on the currency markets is that 'when America sneezes the U.K catches a cold' so our economy tends to follow shortly behind theirs and as they appear to be moving int the right direction following these results it gives investors a bit more confidence in the Pound again.

Sterling has a mixed start to the day - strength against the Euro, Swiss Franc and Dollar AED - Losses against AUD NZD CAD & ZAR

This morning has seen a mixed start to the month for Sterling - In early morning trading the Pound has made losses against the Australian Dollar, New Zealand Dollar & South African Rand whilst making gains against the Euro and Dollar.

The losses may be down to carry trading as it merely seems to be the Antipdean currencies that have gained strength against the Pound.

The gains by the Australian Dollar will have been mainly down to the interest rates over there being increased by 0.25% very early this morning (the third monthly increase in a row).

When an economy raises interest rates it generally has a positive effect on the currency concerned as investors look to shift their funds to higher yielding currencies to get a better return for their money.

There is now concern that the Pound may have a poor December - i'm not 100% convinced however there are worrying signs slowly creeping in again so we could easily see another dip before things start to pick up again.

I personally believe that the early part of next year is when the Pound will start to gain ground as it is currently clearly undervalued in my opinion. Once we are confirmed as out of a recession and data releases/confidence starts to come back into the U.K I think things will serioyusly pick up speed again - providing our banks have not invested too heavily in Dubai!!!
