The Pound Finishes the day up against Euro and Dollar and down against the Antipdean Currencies

Sterling started the day off with minor losses against most major currecies and large losses against the Antipdean currencies (AUD,NZD & ZAR)

At the point of writing this post however things have majorly turned around with the markets seeing major Euro weakness due to no agreement being released regarding Greece although announcements have been made that something is in place.

Sterling gained nearly a cent over the Dollar in afternoon as it pulled away from the year low figures seen on Monday.

It is showing resistance levels at 1.57 however who knows where things may go over the course of this evening and tommorow.

With the delayed retail sales for the U.S due out in the afternoon tommorow and absolutely dire weather conditions in parts of America the charge for the Dollar may well be halted and reversed sooner than thought, stay in close contact tommorow if you have any upcoming currency transfers as in this volatile market either great buying levels can arise or lots of money can be lost within minutes!

Sterling continues to find strength - important information for anyone with currency transfers to make!

Sterling has made yet another solid start to the days trading up by nearly 0.5% against a basket of major currencies.

It appears that my predictions from the back end of last year are so far looking pretty good as throughout reports from September onwards I have said that late January onwards will be the time for The Pound to make a fightback - the question is how long will it last??

There are a number of underlying factors that are still sniffing around that may falter the climb in the near future inclusive of Retail sales figures for January which I believe will be particuarly dire with the weather we have seen, this will all affect the revised GDP figures and may hamper SDterling really pushing on in February.

Also there is due to be a lot of political instability with the Iraq inquiry and an upcoming election which may lead to Sterling weakness alongside the final negative being the terror alert in the U.K being extremely high at present - should anything actually happen this could really knock the Pound immediately.

The four factors that effect the value of a currency are Economic stability, Political uncertainty, Acts of Terror and Acts of god.

If you have an upcoming requirement it may be worth hedging your bets and booking half on a forward contract so that you know even if these factors do bring the Pound crashing back down you have at least taken some advantage of this spike.

Sterling strength once again following higher than expected inflation figures for the U.K

This week has seen some great Sterling strength against a basket of major currencies following numerous data releases including Rightmove house prices coming out much better than expected and inflation this morning being much higher than expected.

If inflation is high the best way to push it down is to raise interest rates and when interest rates are hiked it is generally seen as positive for the currency concerned and with the markets moving on what may potentially happen as well as what has happened this has led to the Pound rising quite substantially for a change.

Should you wish to take advantage of this rare spike do feel free to get in contact with me straight away on the number below just in case it is once again the same story of last year and Sterling taking two steps forward and three steps back

Sterling Euro could see large movements today with GDP and Interest rate decisions for the Eurozone also unemployment data for the U.S

Today looks to be important and will be a key indication as to what December may bring for Sterling,Euro and the U.S Dollar - Alongside a host of other currencies that are linked for example the AED - directly pegged to the U.S Dollar at 3.6725.

The Eurozone has two of the most important releases today firstly with the revised GDP (Gross Domestic Product) data this morning - Any figure different than expected could lead to volatility.

At 12.45 the Eurozone also release their interest rate decision followed by a speech by head of the ECB Jean Claude Trichet. No change in interest rates is expected however any comments in the speecxh after or mention of upcoming economic policies may bring market movements.

The U.S release some unemployment data later on this afternoon which will also be a key one to look out for.

Should you require information on expectations for these releases and the effects they may have do not hesitate to get in touch.

Dollar weakness - Minor Sterling strength - Commodity prices play their part on a basket of major currencies too need to buy or sell currency?

The Dollar weakened over yesterdays trading for a number of reasons, firstly following the dust settling oover the Dubai situation (I am sure it won't be long before it comes back again with a vengance) investors are now once again willing to pump their money into perceived riskier currencies instead of leaving it in the safer haven of the Dollar in order to get higher returns.

When things are looking shaky in the world economy investors do generally tend to shift funds to Dollars or indeed into gold - hence the fact that we have seen a huge increase in gold prices this year, when things settle slightly then as mentioned the funds get pulled out of the Dollar and Gold (priced in Dollars) potentially leading to Dollar weakness.

Oil prices are also particuarly high at present, and with the U.S being a net consumer of oil (they buy more than they produce) this pushes prices up in the states as a whole potentially weakening the Dollar again hence the movements we saw yesterday.

This is good news however for Countries/economies such as Canada, Australia and South Africa who have huge mining interests so in turn this should strengthen these currencies so anyone holding out for GBP/AUD or GBP/ZAR rates to improve may want to reconsider - especailly with Australia proving they are holding strong and increasing interest rates for a third month running on Tuesday.

Todays data due out is Producer Price Index for the Eurozone at 10:00am - expected is a rise of 0.1% month on month for Octover - any change may lead to volatility.

This lunchtime onwards we see data out for the U.S so keep your eyes peeled for Dollar movements throughout the afternoon.

Due to buy or sell EUR USD AUD NZD SEK ZAR CHF or one of many other major currencies? Volatile day ahead for Sterling unemployment and inflation data

The Pound faces a rocky day on the currency markets as a flurry of important data is due to be released this morning, starting off at 09:30 where we see some unemployment data followed by the Bank of England quarterly inflation report and Mervyn King (Governor of the BOE)speaking at 10:30am.

Both should bring volatility - the unemployment could cause movements dependant on whether or not it comes out better or worse than expected and indications on how the BOE plan to battle the economic and inflationary situation over here should lead to movements one way or another.

My personal opinion is that we may see some weakness today, unemployment is a coin toss as to which way things will pan out but I believe it may be slightly worse than expected and Mr King is notorious throughout 2009 for talking the Pound down - my opinion is that Sterling - Euro may finish up the day in the 1.10s however I could easily be wrong and eating my words in 15 minutes time!!

Should you wish to discuss an upcoming transfer no matter how big or small with me personally do feel free to contact me either by emailing djw@currencies.co.uk or calling my direct line 01494 787462 for a friendly and impartial information on how to achieve a great exchange rate.

Sterling hits 6 year low against a basket of currencies inclusive of EUR - Year lows against NOK and CAD

Following another rocky days trading for Sterling yesterday early morning screens today are still that depressing colour of red. A red screen generally means that the Pound has lost value against each particular currency and green screens mean a gain over the course of the day.

At the time of writing this we once again see red screens against USD, EUR, NZD, NOK, CHF and THB. Green screens in early morning trading are against the AUD and JPY.

This really has been and looks like it may continue to be a torrid time for Sterling in the short term and my personal opinion is that we are following the same pattern as last christmas... so may not see any real recovery until early next year... obviously anything can happen in a matter of hours on the markets let alone months but from someone that deals with this kind of thing day in day out things do not look too positive.

Sterling report and forecast against a basket of major currencies - early morning strength

Sterling has started the day off on a slightly more positive note making minor gains against most major currencies in early morning trading.

It is certainly refreshing to see green screens in the offices following the past few days of Sterling dropping away off the back of comments from Mervyn King and a huge drop in confidence in the Pound.

It appears confidence may be returning in the U.K with the FTSE being at its highest point in a year, so avoiding further shock announcements from King or Mr Darling then I would hope we gain back ground towards the end of this week.

Retail sales datya are due at 09:30am, expect volatility should these figures come out different than analysts have forecast.

Sterling continues weakness following comments from King gbp v eur usd nzd usd zar sek, dkk, nok, aud, nzd

Sterling has contiuned to make minor losses against most major currencies this morning off the back of Mervyn Kings comments yesterday regarding the U.K economy.

We actually had slightly better than expected unemployment data for the U.K this morning which has assisted Sterling in making back some of the ground lost in early morning trading however it appears investors confidence in the Pound has once again been knocked by one of our key economic figures.

GBP Pound Sterling report against Euro USD and most major currencies

Today saw the release of the much anticipated ILO (Independent Labour Organisation) figures which although didn’t come out as badly as expected, still came out extremely poor and indicated we have a very long way to go before we make it to the other side of the current recession.

Unemployment rose by 220,000 to 2,435,000 in the quarter leading up to June which actually pushed the jobless rate to 7.8%. We also saw a 12 year high for the people claiming unemployment benefit, which increased by 24,900 to 1.58 million.

This certainly does not paint a great picture for the U.K economy and came out just an hour before the Bank Of England quarterly inflation report which was released at 10:30am. During this report the governor of the BOE Mervyn King warned that any recovery throughout 2010 would be ‘slow and protracted’

Alongside this rather depressing announcement King also mentioned that in order to stimulate the economy further measures may need to be taken alongside the Quantitative easing programme that is already in place. The British Chambers of Commerce have now mentioned that unemployment is likely to keep rising and that even if the economy ceases to contract and starts growing again then may even go above 3 million!

All of this information really does paint a sorry picture for Sterling in the near future, as with rapidly rising unemployment levels and even more stimulus packages due to be introduced it just goes to show that exchange rates still may get a lot worse before they get any better. Should you have an upcoming requirement to send money overseas it may be prudent to contact your account manager here at Foreign Currency Direct who will happily discuss the options available to you which include forward contracts, stop and limit orders.

Specific Currency News

EUR - A relatively quiet day on the markets yesterday for the Euro however as opposed to our Governor suggesting that there is a bleak outlook for the U.K economy the head of the European Central Bank Trichet has recently been saying that he believes the outlook for 2010 in the Eurozone is fairly positive – Should this be the case anyone with future Euro purchases either now or in the near future may wish to consider their options.

USD - The federal reserve release their interest rate decision this evening at 19:15pm no rate change is expected however comment following this may cause volatility.

Other major currencies – The Australian Dollar and New Zealand Dollar have enjoyed the last few weeks trading against Sterling with the AUD dropping below the 2 level and hitting a 13 year low alongside the New Zealand Dollar also dropping to lows that have not been seen for a long time. The South African Rand however has lost ground recently against Sterling due to the ongoing threat of strikes over there, leading to electricity being cut off and productivity being seriously hampered.

The strength shown by the AUD and NZD may be down to carry trading – a full explanation of which is outlined below by Director and currency specialist here at FCD Stephen Hughes.

“Carry trades are an investor tool where large amounts of a currency with a low interest rate (such as JPY 0.1%) are borrowed and invested in a currency that provides a much greater return such as the Australian Dollar (3%) in order to benefit from the interest rate differential. These are often used in conjunction with foreign exchange forward contracts in order to remove any exchange rate uncertainty.”

During this volatile period for Sterling it is imperative you are in a position to act fast and be able to book a rate off the back of one phone call. In order to find yourself in this position click here to open a trading facility which is completely free and carries no obligation to trade. Upon doing this you will be allocated a personal and friendly account manager who can keep you up to date with market movements alongside making you aware of any excellent buying opportunities throughout the day.

Data out today

07:00am – German GDP data –
This data will inform us of how much the German economy has grown or has shrunk throughout the last quarter and figures for year on year. Expected is -0.2% and any change from this may bring volatility.

13:30pm – US Retail Sales & Jobless Claims – Retail sales data will be announced for Month on Month and Year On Year – expectations are for a 0.3% drop MOM and 0.6% increase YOY, again any change should bring volatility. Jobless claims will effectively announce how many people in the U.S are claiming benefit currently, a rise will be seen as negative and a decrease positive.

GBP - EUR GBP - USD GBP -AUD GBP -NZD GBP -ZAR and a basket other of major currencies - morning report

Good morning readers,

Sterling has started the day off without any major movements against the USD, EUR, AUD or NZD but quite a big movement has been seen against the ZAR.

Already in early mornings trading Sterling - Rand has gained nearly 1% which is quite a significant movement, and could mean quite a large difference on the cost of any upcoming purchase.

Data due out today includes some manufacturing data out for the U.K at 09:30am - following the extremely positive PMI (Purchasing Managers Index) release on Monday which caused Sterling strength, i would expect this release to also come out a little better than expected which could lead to further Sterling strength - although the currency markets do like to surprise us so be aware that anything can happen!!!

Sterling strengthens following Nationwide house price data

Sterling has had a great start to Thursdays trading following extremely encouraging data released by Nationwide this morning.

Positive movements have been seen for the following.

GBP - EUR 0.63%
GBP - USD 0.79%
GBP - NZD 1.45%
GBP - JPY 0.83%
GBP - THB 0.77%
GBP - CHF 0.79%

The chief economist at Nationwide also added that he believed that prices may even end 2009 higher than they began the year - something that was totally unthinkable a number of months ago.

This has caused the Pound to gain ground against most major currencies and at the time of writing this report Sterling was up by 0.63% against the Euro and 0.79% against the Dollar - great news for anyone with upcoming overseas transfers.

Sterling weakness - Report on trading GBP - USD GBP - AUD GBP - ZAR and more

Sterling report – Yesterdays trading

Sterling had a relatively quiet day against the Euro yesterday staying pretty stable throughout the day on a thin day for data. Below I have outlined the major movers and potential reasons as to why the currencies moved as they did.

GBP – USD

The U.S released weaker than expected Consumer Confidence data during yesterday afternoon which would usually mean a weakened U.S Dollar, however by market close Sterling had lost 0.39% against the Greenback, possibly due to the worry of the Bank of England potentially introducing further Quantitative easing and banking stocks continuing to stay low.

GBP – AUD

Sterling had a mixed day yesterday, with movement against the Australian Dollar being a loss of 0.66% . This was following comments by the governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia suggesting that the interest rates may be hiked in the near future over there. As regular readers may know an interest hike usually brings strength to the currency concerned, as investors look to shift funds over to that particular currency in order to receive a better return.

GBP – ZAR
Sterling started off the day losing ground against the South African Rand being approximately 0.6% down in early morning trading, only to do a complete turnaround by market close ending the day up by 0.85% which may be down to carry trading as no major data releases were due from South Africa.

As I’m sure you can imagine this would make a huge difference on the cost of sending money to South Africa. A purchase of ZAR1,000,000 would cost over £1000 less had you caught the rate at the right time yesterday.

This is where we come in – Upon opening an account with Foreign Currency Direct you are allocated a dedicated account manager who will happily tailor their assistance to your needs. If you either require daily updates on market movements or to be made aware of any upcoming data that may affect your transfer then you account manager will keep in touch regularly.
House prices rise for first time since Jan 2008

Yesterday saw one positive release from the land registry confirming that house prices had officially risen month on month for the first time since January 2008. Although the 0.1% increase is obviously better news than we have seen on the housing price side of things for a while, it merely shows that prices seem to be flattening out at present and a recovery appears to still be quite far away.

Prices are now sat at 14% less than records show for the same month last year and the survey generally compares the prices of homes sold now compared with the price paid for properties last year.

Although in general the release is still better news for the U.K and indeed the Pound, Sterling still struggled to make any major gains throughout the course of the trading day – a similar pattern to that of last week where although we saw very positive retail sales and mortgage approval releases Sterling still failed to make major gains.

This is slightly worrying for anyone needing to send money overseas in the near future, as if the Pound can’t make gains off the back of positive data then just what will happen next time we see a negative release??

During this mixed period for Sterling it is imperative you are in a position to act fast and be able to book a rate off the back of one phone call. In order to find yourself in this position click here to open a trading facility which is completely free and carries no obligation to trade. Upon doing this you will be allocated a personal and friendly account manager who can keep you up to date with market movements alongside making you aware of any excellent buying opportunities throughout the day.

Today’s Data

Today is extremely thin on the ground data wise, with a few U.S releases at 13:30pm, which aren’t expected to have much influence on the markets. On days such as today smaller announcements tend to have larger effects on the value of a currency so it may be prudent to contact your account manager first thing this morning and make them aware should you be looking to transfer funds in the near future.

Pound Sterling Update

House pricing data released by the Land Registry has confirmed that house prices have increased month on month for the first time since January 2008.

This is better news for Sterling following last weeks GDP data though has made little inprovement on the strength of the Pound so far today.

With this data alongside retail sales and mortgage approvals all coming out positive and Sterling still refusing to shift back in the right direction it starts to make me think that there is just no confidence at all in the Pound at present.

Usually Sterling would strengthen off the back of these releases however it has made little progress against a basket of major currencies so should you have an upcoming transfer it may be prudent to start considering your options as any bad data releases may well push the value down a lot further.
