Minor Sterling strength ahead of key GDP data - Pound gains against JPY CAD DKK CHF THB HKD USD EUR - Still minor losses against AUD NZD ZAR

Sterling has made minor gains against a basket of major currencies in early morning trading as investors heads turn towards key GDP (Gross Domestic Product) data whereby the figures released last month of a contraction of -0.4% are set to be revised to -0.3%.

The release is due out at 09:30am and should figures come out any worse or better than expected we could see major market movements for Sterling against every major currency.

There is big news due out today for the U.K regarding banking charges and with over 1million people seeking to claim these back this could lead to major concerns once again for the banking sector.

Should the public win the court battle this could lead to huge changes in the way our bank accounts are run in the U.K, we could see monthly charges just to have an account, charges to withdraw from ATM's and basically charges for everything in the banks bid to recover their money - personally I can't see this being too positive for the Pound.

Elsewhere, South Africa are now officially out of a recession in news announced yesterday so good news for the Rand, yet another economy to have come out before the U.K!

Latest Pound Sterling report - Fitch comment on U.K AAA status - adds to Pounds woes Losses for GBP against USD EUR AUD SEK ZAR CHF NZD HKD CZK JPY

It has come to light that at 5am this morning Fitch - a well recognised credit rating company released comments claiming that the U.K are most at risk to lose their AAA credit rating as things stand.

Should this happen you could see Sterling drop rapidly as it would be seen as extremely negative for the U.K and indeed the Pound hence the fact that rates have dropped away over the course of the morning as markets move on rumour as well as fact.

Pound Sterling Forecast - GBP continues losses in early morning trading - GBP weakness against EUR USD SEK AUD NZD CHF ZAR CZK JPY

Following a mixed bag of data overnight and this morning for the Pound - Sterling has made considerable losses against most major currencies in early morning trading.

RICS - The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors announced overnight that they now believe house prices will continue to rise from here forward and buyers are now outnumbering sellers pushing prices back up.

On the other side of the coin, Barclays nine month profits have fallen by a fifth which may be down to the fact they were hit by £6.2 Billion in charges to cover bad debts.

There are a number of banking releases due in the next few weeks and with the banks being headline news throughout 2009 this information tends to have more of an effect than it used to on the currency markets.

Bank of England minutes bring Sterling strength against all major currenices - EUR USD AUD NZD CAD SEK JPY

The bank of England minutes have bought Sterling strength across the board this morning which is refreshing news for those of you with upcoming requirements to send money overseas, and terribly frustrating for those that are due to bring funds back as the possibility of 'missing the boat' on the lower levels may have now become a reality.

BOE governor Mervyn King has even been saying slightly more positive words regarding the U.K of late so we could well see further gains over the course of the day.

Sterling Report and Forecast against USD EUR NZD AUD JPY

Sterling ended the week on a high in Friday’s trading gaining ground against all major currencies and generally picking up where it left off following Thursdays surprise movements.

Investors had been eagerly awaiting the next mention of quantitative easing by the BOE and for the first time in a long time the news was fairly positive leading to huge gains across the board. Bank of England member Paul Fisher had written in his blog that the QE programme at present appears to be working - this led to gains of over 2% over the days trading against some currencies and at least 1.5% against most major currencies.

The pattern over the past few months for the Pound has been taking two steps forward then dropping three steps back as I’m sure many of you are aware, so if you do have an upcoming currency requirement it may be prudent to take advantage of this rare spike before Sterling even has the chance to drop away again.

Sterling forecast – Upcoming data worldwide

The Pound in general

Sterling is set for another extremely volatile week with a number of key releases due out – most important of all in my opinion being the Bank of England minutes due on Wednesday at 09:30am.

After Sterling’s positive end to the week all investors will be awaiting further information regarding Quantitative easing, and the BOE minutes will play a key part in providing more information as to what will happen next.

Should the minutes back up Fisher’s comments from last week Sterling may well continue its rally however should they play down the comments then the gains made at the end of last week may disappear sooner than a packet of chocolate digestives in John Prescott’s lounge.

Monday – Monday is relatively quiet on the data front with the main data release of the day being The Bank of Japan minutes late at night which could lead to Yen movements.

Tuesday – Tuesday sees inflation releases for both the Eurozone and U.S at 07:00am and 13:30pm respectively when they announce PPI (Producer Price Index) figures. Expect volatility should either release be different than predicted. The Canadian Dollar could also have a rocky day with the Canadian Interest rate decision due at 14:00pm – Although no change in rates is expected be aware of further economic releases.

Wednesday – As mentioned earlier in the report I believe this is the biggest day for Sterling followers barring surprises popping up like they have been of late. The New Zealand Dollar may have some movements in the early hours as credit card spending comes out at 03:00am and the Dollar completes the third key release of the day when the Fed announce their Beige book – a report on how their economy is fairing and how they plan to combat the current predicament, expect Dollar volatility.

Unemployment data slightly better than expected for U.K - Minor strength against USD EUR CHF CAD - still losses against AUD JPY and ZAR

Unemployment data released this morning was ever so slightly better than expected leading to minor Sterling strength against most major currencies.

Although it was actually better than expected the figures are still pretty poor.

The Pound has still lost ground against the AUD, JPY and ZAR which may be down to carry trading - this is where investors borrow money from a currency with a lower interest rate then invest it into one with a much higher interest rate - making money on the difference.

This was a major factor in market movements last year and it appears investors have started to do it again.

Sterling hits 6 year low against a basket of currencies inclusive of EUR - Year lows against NOK and CAD

Following another rocky days trading for Sterling yesterday early morning screens today are still that depressing colour of red. A red screen generally means that the Pound has lost value against each particular currency and green screens mean a gain over the course of the day.

At the time of writing this we once again see red screens against USD, EUR, NZD, NOK, CHF and THB. Green screens in early morning trading are against the AUD and JPY.

This really has been and looks like it may continue to be a torrid time for Sterling in the short term and my personal opinion is that we are following the same pattern as last christmas... so may not see any real recovery until early next year... obviously anything can happen in a matter of hours on the markets let alone months but from someone that deals with this kind of thing day in day out things do not look too positive.
