Minor Sterling strength ahead of key GDP data - Pound gains against JPY CAD DKK CHF THB HKD USD EUR - Still minor losses against AUD NZD ZAR

Sterling has made minor gains against a basket of major currencies in early morning trading as investors heads turn towards key GDP (Gross Domestic Product) data whereby the figures released last month of a contraction of -0.4% are set to be revised to -0.3%.

The release is due out at 09:30am and should figures come out any worse or better than expected we could see major market movements for Sterling against every major currency.

There is big news due out today for the U.K regarding banking charges and with over 1million people seeking to claim these back this could lead to major concerns once again for the banking sector.

Should the public win the court battle this could lead to huge changes in the way our bank accounts are run in the U.K, we could see monthly charges just to have an account, charges to withdraw from ATM's and basically charges for everything in the banks bid to recover their money - personally I can't see this being too positive for the Pound.

Elsewhere, South Africa are now officially out of a recession in news announced yesterday so good news for the Rand, yet another economy to have come out before the U.K!

Sterling strength - The start of a fightback???? Pound gains on USD EUR AUD DKK HKD

Good morning readers and I hope you had a great weekend.....

Sterling has started off the week making gains against a basket of major currencies, most noticeably against the Dollar, gaining 1.21% at the time of writing this email and hitting Three month highs.

This poses the question - will these gains continue over the course of the week??

Data due out in the early part of this week is relatively thin on the ground for the U.K however Wednesday that all changes completely.

Wednesday sees the release of unemployment data in the morning, we also see the Bank of England inflation letter which details how they plan to combat the economic situation going forward and also BOE governor Mervyn King speaks - as the markets move on rumour as well as fact any hint of what he sees ahead or comments regarding the economy may cause volatility.

The U.S also have a flurry of data out over the course of the week so expect movements between these two currencies, the potential to break 1.70 again is certainly there...

Sterling strength as confidence in the Pound still seems to remain high - recession or no recession! GBP EUR USD AUD NZD SEK CHF DKK

Yesterday's trading saw a surprise increase in the value of Sterling against a basket of major currencies as it seems that although we are still quite clearly in a recession investors still have confidence in the U.K

My personal opinion has been for a while that Sterling is undervalued and we have taken more of a hit than we should have during the global situation however things may dip once again before they get better.

This feeling may now be echoed by major investors hence the marked improvement in rates over the past 24 hours when economic data has been thin.

U.K still in recession - Pound Sterling weakness against USD EUR SEK AUD NZD DKK - Pound Sterling GBP Forecast for the week ahead

The Pound had a terrible day on Friday following the unexpected official figures confirming that the U.K is well and truely still in a recession.

Most analysts had predicted that we would see growth of 0.20% over the last quarter however figures released actually confirmed that the economy contracted by 0.4% - a massive difference and as the markets move on rumour as well as fact Sterling instantly started to make losses against a basket of major currencies.

The markets would have previously factored in positive news and as soon as the information came out it once again led to the two steps forward then three steps back pattern the Pound has adopted this year.

I have previously in this report said and I will say again that I believe Sterling is currently undervalued however it will probably not be until at least the turn of the year before we see any marked improvement...

The Days ahead -

Monday

Today appears to be extremely quiet data wise however be aware of any unexpected announcements. German consumer confidence data came out first thing and was a little worse than expected which may lead to early Euro weakness.

Tuesday

Consumer confidence for the U.S is released in the afternoon & Washington in the evening alongside a minor bit of data out for the U.K first thing in the morning, expect volatility should either release be different than expected.

Wednesday

An inflation release in the first few minutes of Wednesday for Australia by means of CPI data, New home sales data in the afternoon for the U.S and a big one for the New Zealand Dollar late at night as they release their interest rate decision - will they go down the same route as Australia and hike rates?

For those of you that aren't aware an interest rate rise generally leads to positive movement for the currency concerned and a rate cut is generally negative as investors look to move their funds somewhere where they will achieve a higher return for their money.

Thursday

Half past one brings out some important information for the U.S as they release their GDP data confirming whether or not they are still stuck in a recession.

This data should lead to volatility on the markets for the Dollar and may well have a minor affect on Sterling as a well known saying on the markets is that when the U.S sneezes the U.K catches a cold so it may well indicate what is to come over here.

In short, yet another volatile week ahead and reasonably quiet data wise for the U.K however anything may pop up over the course of the week and investors will more than likely still have the R word for the U.K ringing in their head which could lead to further weakness.

Sterling ends the week with negative movement against most major currenices - despite positive data! drop against EUR USD AUD NZD ZAR CAD CHF DKK

Sterling has had a pretty poor days trading on the markets today, even though we saw better than expected Trade Balance and Producer Price index this morning for the U.K

This once again is worrying for those of you with upcoming needs to send money overseas, and fantastic news forthose bringing funds back as a result of overseas property sales or exporting of goods.

At the time of writing this post Sterling has dropped 0.60% against the Euro, 0.91% against the Dollar and 0.78% against the Australian Dollar.

Next week should bring an interesting week on the markets with a lot of important data due out for various economies... feel free to contact me and I will inform you of what is due that may specifically affect your requirement.

Sterling Report and Forecast October 2009 against EUR AUD NZD ZAR CAD DKK CHF THB CZK DKK SEK Is Sterling - Euro Parity possible??

Folowing a poor month for Sterling on a trade weighted basis many clients with upcoming requirements to send money overseas may be hoping for better news throughout the month of October.

The first data release of the month suggests we could be potentially looking at quite the opposite as PMI (Purchasing Managers Index) for the U.K came out worse than expected - in fact although analysts had predicted an increase it actually contracted further from last months release.

The same data was also released for the Euro Zone and typically theirs came out better than expected, although this has not had a major effect on the markets it does not get the month off to a great start.

Many analysts are talking about the possibility of parity against the Euro within this quarter, and with the Bank of England and the media seemingly happy to talk the pound down, alongside the Government looking shaky at present.

There are four factors that effect the value of a currency being economic stability, political certainty, acts of terror and acts of god. Obviously there isn't a huge amount we can do about the second two, but looking at our current economic and political situations it is quite clear that Sterling may be in for a rocky ride in the short term.

Obviously a lot can change in the currency markets in a matter of hours let alone weeks or months, so quite clearly this current view may change so be sure to keep a close eye on updates on my blog should you have transactions to make.

Sterling weakness v eur, usd, aud, nzd, zar, dkk, sek, cad in early morning trading

Upon walking into the office this morning it is red screens accross the board for Sterling meaning the Pound has weakened against pretty much every major currency in early morning trading.

There is no major data releases of note that I can put this weakness down to at present, although German PPI (Producer Price Index) data came out a lot better than expected which may have led to Euro strength.

At the time of writing this post GBP - USD hit 1.6299 and GBP - EUR dropped to 1.1114 which is a huge drop from yesterday.

I will provide further updates once I have found out the reasons behind these losses, however should you have an upcoming transfer it may be prudent to get in touch sooner rather than later.
