Sterling strength once again following higher than expected inflation figures for the U.K

This week has seen some great Sterling strength against a basket of major currencies following numerous data releases including Rightmove house prices coming out much better than expected and inflation this morning being much higher than expected.

If inflation is high the best way to push it down is to raise interest rates and when interest rates are hiked it is generally seen as positive for the currency concerned and with the markets moving on what may potentially happen as well as what has happened this has led to the Pound rising quite substantially for a change.

Should you wish to take advantage of this rare spike do feel free to get in contact with me straight away on the number below just in case it is once again the same story of last year and Sterling taking two steps forward and three steps back

Further Sterling strength following house price data from Rightmove - busy week ahead!

Good morning and I hope you had a great weekend.

A good start to the week for those of you looking to sell Sterling and buy another foreign currency in the near future as Sterling is up accross the board.

The Pound has made gains against all major currencies in early morning trading as the Rightmove house price data came out much better than predicted.

At the time of writing this post Sterling had gained at least 0.40% against a basket of major currencies or a saving of at least £400 on each £100,000 you transfer.

With numerous important releases due over the course of the week investors will be keeping a keen eye on market movements and I personally think this could be the Start of the Sterling fightback although it may well dip a few times along the way.

Tuesday sees key inflation data, the Bank of Englan minutes are due on Wednesday and the European central bank monthly report on Thursday. The week is rounded off with U.K retail sales on Friday which may lead to a volatile finish.

Further Sterling strength against the Euro Following Concerns regarding Greece and the Eurozone as a whole

Sterling has continued a fine end to the week following growing concerns regarding the economy in Greece and the effects it may have on the Eurozone as a whole.

The Pound rallied against the Euro and a basket of major currencies in early morning trading and at the time of writing this Sterling/Euro was at a four month high - A welcome change in luck for those with upcoming property purchases.

European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said on Friday Greece had much work ahead to resolve its fiscal issues, after highlighting the fiscal challenges to a number of euro zone countries at a news conference the previous day.

This may well limit upside movement for the Euro in the short term so could create some excellent buying opportunities over the coming weeks, that paired with the huge drop in property prices overseas all means investors and people due to emigrate win both ways at present.

Sterling strength following better than expected industrial production and GDP estimate from NIESR - welcome news for those with upcoming purchases!

Sterling has had an extremely positive day on the currency markets today gaining nearly 1% against the Euro, 0.76% against the Dollar, 0.50% against the Australian Dollar and 0.77% against the New Zealand Dollar.

This is all down to two factors - firstly, Industrial Production figures came out a little better than expected leading to minor strength in the morning.

Secondly, The NIESR (National Institute of Economic and Social Research) released their revised GDP figures and indicated that they now believe that the economy grew by 0.30% in the last quarter.

With the GDP figures due at the end of the month expected to confirm we are officially out of a recession all eyes are on any information surrounding this data and the Pound has strengthened healthily off the back of this data.

Tommorow brings the ECB (European Central Bank) interest rate decision at 12:45pm and although no major changes to rates are expected investors will be eagerly anticipating what is said by head of the ECB (Jean Claude Trichet) in his speech afterwards regarding future economic policies.

Sterling Euro Rally as Greece problems come to light - how many more economies in the Eurozone are in the same situation???

Sterling has had a great day against the Euro in early morning trading mainly due to problems in Greece looking like a major concern for investors and it poses the question - With Greece first to step forward and announce such problems who will be next and how many other economies in Europe may also be facing the same problems??

Greece's trade deficit is currently around 12% and they need to have this down to 3% in keeping with Euro Zone requirements.

Italy and Spain may well be next looking at recent figures which may well lead to further Euro weakness.

So far this morning we have seen inflationary data for the U.K all come out slightly higher than expected alongside some minor house price data also better than expected.

The way to conquer high inflation is to raise interest rates and an interest rate hike is generally seen as positive for the currency directly linked with that economy so with the markets moving on rumour as well as fact this may lead to further Sterling strength.

Sterling movements today - unemployment data for U.S could bring big movements for the Dollar - so far strength against EUR SEK CAD ZAR AUD NZD & More

Sterling has started the day off gaining ground against a basket of major currencies - this may be due to investors once again being more willing to invest in the so called 'riskier' pound leading to gains accross the board.

Today is reasonably thin on the ground data wise for the U.K however we do have Non farm payrolls employment data for the U.S which can cause huge volatility some months as expectations can be majorly different to expectations from time to time.

Dollar weakness - Minor Sterling strength - Commodity prices play their part on a basket of major currencies too need to buy or sell currency?

The Dollar weakened over yesterdays trading for a number of reasons, firstly following the dust settling oover the Dubai situation (I am sure it won't be long before it comes back again with a vengance) investors are now once again willing to pump their money into perceived riskier currencies instead of leaving it in the safer haven of the Dollar in order to get higher returns.

When things are looking shaky in the world economy investors do generally tend to shift funds to Dollars or indeed into gold - hence the fact that we have seen a huge increase in gold prices this year, when things settle slightly then as mentioned the funds get pulled out of the Dollar and Gold (priced in Dollars) potentially leading to Dollar weakness.

Oil prices are also particuarly high at present, and with the U.S being a net consumer of oil (they buy more than they produce) this pushes prices up in the states as a whole potentially weakening the Dollar again hence the movements we saw yesterday.

This is good news however for Countries/economies such as Canada, Australia and South Africa who have huge mining interests so in turn this should strengthen these currencies so anyone holding out for GBP/AUD or GBP/ZAR rates to improve may want to reconsider - especailly with Australia proving they are holding strong and increasing interest rates for a third month running on Tuesday.

Todays data due out is Producer Price Index for the Eurozone at 10:00am - expected is a rise of 0.1% month on month for Octover - any change may lead to volatility.

This lunchtime onwards we see data out for the U.S so keep your eyes peeled for Dollar movements throughout the afternoon.

Minor Sterling strength ahead of key GDP data - Pound gains against JPY CAD DKK CHF THB HKD USD EUR - Still minor losses against AUD NZD ZAR

Sterling has made minor gains against a basket of major currencies in early morning trading as investors heads turn towards key GDP (Gross Domestic Product) data whereby the figures released last month of a contraction of -0.4% are set to be revised to -0.3%.

The release is due out at 09:30am and should figures come out any worse or better than expected we could see major market movements for Sterling against every major currency.

There is big news due out today for the U.K regarding banking charges and with over 1million people seeking to claim these back this could lead to major concerns once again for the banking sector.

Should the public win the court battle this could lead to huge changes in the way our bank accounts are run in the U.K, we could see monthly charges just to have an account, charges to withdraw from ATM's and basically charges for everything in the banks bid to recover their money - personally I can't see this being too positive for the Pound.

Elsewhere, South Africa are now officially out of a recession in news announced yesterday so good news for the Rand, yet another economy to have come out before the U.K!

Sterling continues strength ahead of key inflation data - GBP gains on EUR USD AUD NZD CAD CHF SEK and most major currencies

Sterling continued the reasonable start to the week this mornnig making further gains against a basket of major currencies most notably the Australian Dollar and South African Rand - both with gains of over 1% at the time of writing this post.

Inflation data is due out at 09:30am and could be a big market mover dependant on how the figures come out.

Should inflation come out as being particuarly high this would usually lead to Sterling strength (The way to usually tackle high inflation is to hike interest rates and a hike in interest rates would usually be seen as positive for the currency concerned) however in this instance we are not really in the position to hike interest rates due to the economic conditions over here, so this may well be viewed as negative for the Pound as the Bank of England pretty much have no control over inflation.

The BOE also release their inflation report which may give indications as to just how they will go about tackling things in the short term so expect volatility following this as markets do move on rumour as well as fact.

Pound Sterling strength yesterday - spike in the market creates great buying opportunities again major gains on NZD AUD & ZAR

Yesterday saw fantastic movements for those of you with upcoming transfers to send over to Nez Zealand, South Africa and Australia as the Pound soared over the days trading.

The Pound made gains of over 2.5% against the Antipodeans - A difference of £5000 on a £200,000 transfer which just goes to show that by being smart and in a position to book out a rate off of the back of one phone call can make a huge amount of difference on the cost of a property or business transaction overseas.

From what I can see there wasn't any major U.K data out yesterday however potentially a group of releases may have led to the strength, alongside carry trading.

Carry trading is where investors will borrow money from a currency with a low interest rate - (GBP,JPY) and shift them over to a currency with a much higher interest rate (NZD,ZAR,AUD) in order to get a better return for their funds.

Also today sees the revised GDP figures out for the U.S.A and they are expected to be officially out of a recession - A common saying on the currency markets is that when the U.S sneezes the U.K catches a cold therefore this could well be seen as positive for the Pound as well. Expect high Dollar volatility should this release be any different than expected.

Bank of England minutes bring Sterling strength against all major currenices - EUR USD AUD NZD CAD SEK JPY

The bank of England minutes have bought Sterling strength across the board this morning which is refreshing news for those of you with upcoming requirements to send money overseas, and terribly frustrating for those that are due to bring funds back as the possibility of 'missing the boat' on the lower levels may have now become a reality.

BOE governor Mervyn King has even been saying slightly more positive words regarding the U.K of late so we could well see further gains over the course of the day.

Pound Sterling strength huge movements in the right direction against all major currencies USD EUR NZD AUD CAD DKK SEK ZAR JPY

The first few hours of U.K trading have seen massive gains for the Pound against all major currencies inclusive of 1.73% against USD 1.73% against EUR 0.89% against NZD 1.17% against AUD 1.93% against ZAR and 1.65% against CHF.

This is fantastic news for anyone looking to send money overseas and if you have a upcoming transfer it may be worth taking advantage of!!

It is all off the back of two things - Unemloyment data shown in an earlier post and a member of the Bank of England MPC (Monetary Policy Committe) saying that he believes that Quantitative easing is now over for the U.K.

This is major news as every time further QE is bought in or mentioned we tend to see Sterling weakness, and with the market moving on rumour as well as fact this has meant major positive movements for the Pound.

Sterling strength against most major currencies - EUR AUD USD DKK NZD CHF CAD ZAR THB

Today has certainly been a lot more refreshing for my clients that have upcoming transfer from Sterling to other currencies, as today Sterling has actually gained ground against a basket of major currencies.

This appears to be down to a CBI (Confederation of British Industry) Distributive Trades Survey. The CBI is an indicator of short term trends within the U.K retail and wholesale distributive sector. A high reading is seen as positive and a low reading negative for the Pound, and although predicted ato come out as -15 the level actually came out at 3 - Much better than expected!!

This may only be a short term spike as mentioned in previous posts it appears that our Government, Central bank and media all seem set on pushing the Pound back down to lower levels, however there are many surprises on the markets these days so further positive news like this and one would imagine Sterling will be making a solo fightback.

Sterling strength - A refreshing change following Bank of England minutes gbp usd gbp eur gbp aud gbp jpy gbp cad gbp zar gbp thb gbp czk

This morning has seen a slightly better than expected outlook released by the Bank of England in their minutes from the previous meeting at the start of September.

It appears now that they may not be looking to extend the quantitative easing programme past £175 Billion which has led to minor Sterling strength in early morning trading as it brings a little bit of confidence back into the Pound.

This may well be shortlived however, as many national newspapers and major analysts are predicting Sterling - Euro to edge closer to parity over the coming months and no recovery until into 2010.

Should you have an upcoming purchase with Sterling into another currency or be due to be bringing funds back into the U.K it would certainly be prudent to start looking at your options sooner rather than later, do feel free to contact me on the numbers at the top of this page or email me on the link below.

Sterling strength GBP - USD GBP - EUR GBP - AUD GBP - ZAR

Good morning to my regular readers, I hope you had a great weekend.

If you have an upcoming transaction to send money overseas then it is also a great start to the week for you as well, as Sterling has strengthened significantly in Monday mornings trading.

This is all off the back of some much better than expected growth for manufacturing in the U.K with the release of the Purchasing Managers Index. This data captures business conditions in the manufacturing sector and any figure above 50 is seen as bullish for the U.K economy.

The figure actually came out at 50.8 which is extremely promising news as this data also make up a large part of the GDP figures so it indicates that we are making headway towards coming out of the recession.

Sterling forecast - Main data out this week

Early tommorow morning will see the release of the Nationwide house price data due out at 07:00am.

Housing data is an extremely sensitive factor for the U.K economy and expected is for a 0.9% increase month on month resulting in there currently being a 9.3% drop year on year.

The currency markets move on rumour as well as fact so predictions may have already been priced into the market however should the data differ from the preditions expect a volatile start to the trading day for Sterling!!

A better than expected increase should lead to Sterling strength and anything worse than predicted may lead to Sterling starting the week off on a bad note and losing value.

The only other release of note for Sterling at present if the Consumer confidence due at 00:01 on 31st July however the time and day for this data release has been known to be put back.

Should you be unsure as to how this data may affect any upcoming transfers feel free to get in touch and I will be happy to run you through the options available to you.
