Pound Sterling strength yesterday - spike in the market creates great buying opportunities again major gains on NZD AUD & ZAR

Yesterday saw fantastic movements for those of you with upcoming transfers to send over to Nez Zealand, South Africa and Australia as the Pound soared over the days trading.

The Pound made gains of over 2.5% against the Antipodeans - A difference of £5000 on a £200,000 transfer which just goes to show that by being smart and in a position to book out a rate off of the back of one phone call can make a huge amount of difference on the cost of a property or business transaction overseas.

From what I can see there wasn't any major U.K data out yesterday however potentially a group of releases may have led to the strength, alongside carry trading.

Carry trading is where investors will borrow money from a currency with a low interest rate - (GBP,JPY) and shift them over to a currency with a much higher interest rate (NZD,ZAR,AUD) in order to get a better return for their funds.

Also today sees the revised GDP figures out for the U.S.A and they are expected to be officially out of a recession - A common saying on the currency markets is that when the U.S sneezes the U.K catches a cold therefore this could well be seen as positive for the Pound as well. Expect high Dollar volatility should this release be any different than expected.

U.K to officially come out of recession this morning?? Sterling set to have a strong day??? early morning gains for GBP against EUR USD AUD NZD SEK

Sterling has started off Friday morning making gains against a basket of major currencies ahead of Gross Domestic Product figures due out shortly at 09:30am.

A economy officially enters a recession when GDP records two concecutive quarters of negative growth and they are officially out of the recession once that particular economy records just one quarter of 0% or positive growth.

Expectations are for our GDP figures to come out at 0.20% growth this morning which would mean the U.K is officially out of the recession, however as I'm sure many of you are aware even though the figures don't lie there is still a long long way before we really see a real recovery.

One would imagine that should figures come out as expected (or higher) then Sterling should have a really positive day as confidence in the Pound increases, however should figure come out worse or even more should we see negative again and still be locked in this recession for another three months I would expect the Pound to plummet.

In short an extremely volatile day is predicted one way or another on markets and my personal opinion is after seeing manufacturing data being poor alongside retail sales we could be set for weakness.

Pound losses continue - gbp eur gbp aud gbp usd gbp nzd gbp zar gbp sek gbp dkk Pound Sterling report

Good morning readers and I hope you had a great weekend!

Sterling has continued the same patter as it followed at the back end of last week off the bank of low confidence and the potential of further quantitative easing for the U.K and national debt reaching alarming figures.

The telegraph has actually reported today that they believe Sterling/Euro could go back down to parity again which is not great news for anyone with upcoming transactions to make overseas.

It appears that things look set to get worse before they get better and it may well be until well into 2010 before we really see any significant Sterling improvement.

GBP EUR GBP USD GBP NZD Sterling bounces back

Sterling has had a fantastic days trading compared to the previous week and a half with the refreshing site of green screens in the office over the course of the day.

Although we have only seen minor gains (0.48% against EUR, 0.41% against USD and 0.96% against the NZD at the time of writing this post)it is still finally positive movement but just how long will this last?????

We still continue to see poor data releases for the U.K which suggests that there may still be further weakness to come in the short term, however one would expect Sterling to gain back ground by the turn of the year.

Sterling weakness Following Weak PMI and Mortgage approval data GBP EUR GBP USD GBP AUD GBP NZD GBP ZAR

Today has seen Sterling lose ground against a basket of major currenices, following much worse than expected mortgage approval and PMI data this morning.

This has continued Sterlings slide in the wrong direction and now has analysts posing the question - just how much further will it go before we start to get better???

Personally I believe it will get ever so slightly worse before it gets better but at present Sterling is still majorly undervalued so I am merely looking for data to start to become slightly more positive before we start the turn around.....

All eyes are on quantitative easing announcements in the coming weeks as these seem to be one of the major talking points at present, and one of the data releases that is assisting Sterling's decline.

gbp eur gbp usd gbp aud gbp nzd gbp zar Unemployment data and quarterly inflation report due out for U.K today - Poor figures expected

A rocky ride is predicted for Sterling today with unemployment data due out at 09:30am which is predicted to hit a 15 year high!

Although this may have pretty much been priced into the market as the currency markets do move on rumour as well as fact, should the release come out as bad as expected one would expect Sterling weakness to start off the day.

Also released today is the Bank Of England quarterly inflation report which comes out at 10:30am. Expected is a rather dim outlook from the BOE on the future of the U.K economy and for inflation to be below the 2% target level, alongside a potential downgrading of growth forecasts for the U.K economy.

Should all of this data come out as expected, personally I believe Sterling may lose ground against a basket of major currencies today so should you have an upcoming transfer it may be prudent to get in touch with me to discuss your requirements and the many options available to you.

We also see the Federal reserve interest rate decision out tonight at 19:15pm, no change is expected however all eyes will be on potential comments regarding the U.S economy following the decision.
