U.K to officially come out of recession this morning?? Sterling set to have a strong day??? early morning gains for GBP against EUR USD AUD NZD SEK

Sterling has started off Friday morning making gains against a basket of major currencies ahead of Gross Domestic Product figures due out shortly at 09:30am.

A economy officially enters a recession when GDP records two concecutive quarters of negative growth and they are officially out of the recession once that particular economy records just one quarter of 0% or positive growth.

Expectations are for our GDP figures to come out at 0.20% growth this morning which would mean the U.K is officially out of the recession, however as I'm sure many of you are aware even though the figures don't lie there is still a long long way before we really see a real recovery.

One would imagine that should figures come out as expected (or higher) then Sterling should have a really positive day as confidence in the Pound increases, however should figure come out worse or even more should we see negative again and still be locked in this recession for another three months I would expect the Pound to plummet.

In short an extremely volatile day is predicted one way or another on markets and my personal opinion is after seeing manufacturing data being poor alongside retail sales we could be set for weakness.

Pound losses continue - gbp eur gbp aud gbp usd gbp nzd gbp zar gbp sek gbp dkk Pound Sterling report

Good morning readers and I hope you had a great weekend!

Sterling has continued the same patter as it followed at the back end of last week off the bank of low confidence and the potential of further quantitative easing for the U.K and national debt reaching alarming figures.

The telegraph has actually reported today that they believe Sterling/Euro could go back down to parity again which is not great news for anyone with upcoming transactions to make overseas.

It appears that things look set to get worse before they get better and it may well be until well into 2010 before we really see any significant Sterling improvement.

Sterling report - House Price Balance data from RICS much better than expected gbp eur gbp usd gbp zar gbp aud gbp nzd gbp cad gbp sek and more

This morning has seen minor Sterling strength on the markets against a basket of major currencies following much better than expected house price balance data released by RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) overnight.

Analysts had predicted a drop of 0.2% however figures came out with a positive movement of 10.7%.

this may be slightly artificial as there is less property on the market at present therefore prices natuarally will go up due to the old rule of supply and demand so those of you with upcoming transfers may not want to take too much from these results as the U.K is still in a very poor position finacially.

GBP report Sterling outlook gbp eur gbp aud gbp nzd gbp usd gbp chf gbp jpy

This report will cover recent currency market movements for Sterling against a basket of major currencies over the course of the week covering vital economic data releases for the U.K and worldwide, also outlining data that is due out in the near future that may affect the cost of sending money overseas or selling foreign currency to bring back into Pounds.

Sterling weakness in advance of BOE rate decision

Sterling suffered yesterday against a basket of major currencies as investors confidence in the Pound started to slip leading up to the much anticipated Bank Of England interest rate decision due out on Thursday at 12:00pm.

Although it is widely expected that rates will remain at 0.50% all eyes will be on announcements concerning any further quantitative easing to be introduced, as following the last few rate decisions we have witnessed announcements regarding this which has generally led to Sterling weakness.

The Bank Of England minutes for August suggested that a couple of members of the BOE (including governor Mervyn King) were in favour of a further £25billion to be pumped into the economy in the near future.

This could well lead to further Sterling weakness not only on Thursday but in the days leading up to it as investors start to shift funds away from the Pound in advance, as markets do move on rumour as well as fact and the potential of seeing more Sterling in circulation obviously means it becomes less valuable.

If you do have an upcoming transaction to make then it may be prudent to consider your options sooner rather than later, as although many major analysts and indeed myself believe that Sterling is currently undervalued it is also quite widely thought that it may get worse before it gets better. Why not get in contact with one of our friendly and experienced traders on 0800 328 5884 who will happily explain all options available to you to ensure your foreign currency costs as little as possible.

Specific Currency News – The week ahead

GBP – An important week ahead for the Pound with a huge amount of important data that may lead to extreme volatility over the course of the week, overnight will be the RICS house price data release, Halifax house price data is also due out in the near future on top of this. House prices are a key indication as to how the U.K economy is moving so expect movement off the back of this information.

Wednesday night brings an important release for the U.K by way of the GDP estimate by the NIESR (National Institute of Economic & Social Research). The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) data will inform us as to whether the U.K economy is growing or contracting and if so by how much, this estimate will give a good indication as to what to expect for the next figures and could lead to high volatility.

As previously mentioned in the report Thursday brings the U.K interest rate decision alongside various information due on Friday with the key factor being PPI (Producer Price Index).

USD - Yesterday was labour day in the States so led to thinner trading on the Dollar however we did still lose a little bit of ground over the course of the day. A reasonably quiet week ahead for U.S data releases with the main factor being the FED Beige book tomorrow evening.

EUR – A relatively quiet week for the Euro zone this week however do not be fooled into thinking that this will mean rates remain stable, there are numerous surprises popping up on the markets lately and with so many economies performing in different ways it is certainly worth keeping a close eye out for unexpected announcements on economic policy by the ECB.

Other Major Currencies – During the course of this week and the early part of next week there are a number of key releases for other major currencies including a number of interest rate decisions – the major ones being as follows; Tomorrow sees the Reserve Bank of New Zealand interest rate decision, Thursday brings the Bank Of Canada interest rate decision, Monday brings the decision in Japan and a week today the Swiss National Bank will announce what they plan to do with interest rates.

For those of you that aren’t aware interest rate decisions can be a key release for that particular economy. An interest rate cut generally has a negative affect on the currency concerned and a hike a positive one, this is due to investors possibly shifting their funds over to a higher yielding currency to achieve a better return on their investment and similarly a rate hike generally brings positive movement.

This week is very heavy data wise so should you have an upcoming currency transaction no matter which currency you are looking to sell or buy it is imperative that you inform your account manager here at FCD so that they can keep a close eye on the markets for you. If you do not have a trading facility set up then click here to open one today – It is completely free and carries no obligation to trade, however ensures that you are in the position to book out a rate off of the back of one phone call should rates spike in your favour.

Breaking news – Overnight saw the release of Australian Business confidence which is still on the up, this has led the minor Australian Dollar strength this morning.

Sterling Forecast - The week ahead GBP EUR GBP USD GBP AUD GBP NZD GBP CAD GBP ZAR

Certainly an interesting week ahead on the markets for the Pound, with the Bank of England interest rate decision being the main talking point at present.

The past few interest rate decisions have not bought any rate changes as such, but have dragged up the issue of quantitative easing which has had a negative impact on the value of the Pound.

Quantitative easing is effectively where the government pump more money into the economy and as you can imagine if there is more of a particular currency available then its value decreases.

It also becomes slightly worrying for investors as whilst other major economies like germany and France are announcing their recession coming to an official end, we in the U.K are still throwing vast amounts of money at the situation.

This week also brings out a string of other important data releases for the U.K inclusive of House prices, industrial production, consumer confidence and the other larger release of note - GDP estimate at 00:01am on 10/09/09.

The GDP estimate is an estimation as to how much the economy has grown or contracted in the U.K and as the marklet moves on rumour as well as fact can lead to high volatility.

Obviously the markets move 24 hours a day and although we can't be here to watch rates for you during releases such as this there are options available including limit and stop orders - pick up the phone or email should you wish to discuss how these work.

GBP USD forecast today - Non Farm Payrolls and a host of unemployment data should lead to volatile trading - Also GBP ZAR GBP EUR and many more!

Sterling - Dollar should be looking at a relatively volatile day on the markets as we see a vast amount of unemployment data released at lunchtime.

Firstly, the U.S non farm payroll data can be one of the largest market movers over the course of a month. The non farm payrolls cover the number of people in employment in the states for non agricultural business as this can be seasonal and brings vast changes.

The figure predicted can be a huge amount away from the actual figure and as the markets move on rumour as well as fact, whatever had already been priced in may bring large movements.

GBP EUR GBP USD GBP NZD Sterling bounces back

Sterling has had a fantastic days trading compared to the previous week and a half with the refreshing site of green screens in the office over the course of the day.

Although we have only seen minor gains (0.48% against EUR, 0.41% against USD and 0.96% against the NZD at the time of writing this post)it is still finally positive movement but just how long will this last?????

We still continue to see poor data releases for the U.K which suggests that there may still be further weakness to come in the short term, however one would expect Sterling to gain back ground by the turn of the year.

Sterling weakness Following Weak PMI and Mortgage approval data GBP EUR GBP USD GBP AUD GBP NZD GBP ZAR

Today has seen Sterling lose ground against a basket of major currenices, following much worse than expected mortgage approval and PMI data this morning.

This has continued Sterlings slide in the wrong direction and now has analysts posing the question - just how much further will it go before we start to get better???

Personally I believe it will get ever so slightly worse before it gets better but at present Sterling is still majorly undervalued so I am merely looking for data to start to become slightly more positive before we start the turn around.....

All eyes are on quantitative easing announcements in the coming weeks as these seem to be one of the major talking points at present, and one of the data releases that is assisting Sterling's decline.

gbp eur gbp usd gbp aud gbp nzd gbp zar Unemployment data and quarterly inflation report due out for U.K today - Poor figures expected

A rocky ride is predicted for Sterling today with unemployment data due out at 09:30am which is predicted to hit a 15 year high!

Although this may have pretty much been priced into the market as the currency markets do move on rumour as well as fact, should the release come out as bad as expected one would expect Sterling weakness to start off the day.

Also released today is the Bank Of England quarterly inflation report which comes out at 10:30am. Expected is a rather dim outlook from the BOE on the future of the U.K economy and for inflation to be below the 2% target level, alongside a potential downgrading of growth forecasts for the U.K economy.

Should all of this data come out as expected, personally I believe Sterling may lose ground against a basket of major currencies today so should you have an upcoming transfer it may be prudent to get in touch with me to discuss your requirements and the many options available to you.

We also see the Federal reserve interest rate decision out tonight at 19:15pm, no change is expected however all eyes will be on potential comments regarding the U.S economy following the decision.
